Small lecture
- Reveling the ignorance
Overview
A lecture, or rather a spectacle of digital minimalism, aimed at opening eyes to how little we know about the physical dimension of data. For that purpose I prepared a presentation which weighed was less than an average selfie.
All this digital magic was presented on a 12 years old laptop, which I repaired especially for this occasion by giving it a second life and installing on it Linux Elementary OS.
During the lecture, I showcased the repaired components and challenged the audience to guess: the current value of the refurbished laptop and file size of the presentation.
The person with the closest guess won a USB drive containing Elementary OS and my blessing for installation. All in the name of promoting Open Source solutions.
Reflection
It was fascinating to observe how people took shots at file sizes, equally intriguing was their astonishment upon discovering that refurbishing my laptop cost almost nothing.
This experience revealed that some participants probably thought the presentation weighed as much as the entire Wikipedia. It clearly demonstrates that in the world of bits and bytes, many of us are still navigating with considerable uncertainty.
