Overview

An educational lecture for children carried out during Researchers’ Night at the Experiment Science Center in Gdynia. The aim was to make the youngest aware that the internet is not as “virtual” and “clean” as it might seem.

 

Main objectives

Interactive lecture: presentation of the real impact of the internet on the environment, including such curiosities as underwater cables nibbled by sharks or electronic space debris

“TikTok vs. Water” experiment to rise rise awareness about water footprint, children had to estimate how long a 9-liter vase of water would quench their thirst during uninterrupted TikTok scrolling

  “Email Carbon” puzzle to rise awareness about carbon footprint, children had to guessed which of the three pieces of coal physically represent the CO2 emissions generated by sending 5 emails

  Recycled prizes competitions winners received eco-friendly stickers and… pieces of old motherboards to use as rulers to accustom them at the very young stage to consider e-waste as an valuable material

 

Outcome

The project combined learning with fun, showing children that even their digital actions have a real impact on the environment. And it proved that old computers can have a second life – as school supplies.
